How can you manage spam?
There is no way to stop spam altogether, but these tips can help take back your email box.

• Avoid posting your e-mail address - E-mail addresses are “harvested” by spammers from newsgroups, chat rooms, and web pages. Don’t invite them to use your email address. Experts suggest having one e-mail address that you give only to family and friends for personal correspondence. You can get another, more “disposable” address from Yahoo or Hotmail for bulletin boards, newsgroups, and online shopping. You will get more spam in this email box, but you can keep spammers from cluttering your more private address.

• Report spammers to your ISP or to the FTC - Most ISPs, such as Yahoo, Hotmail, and America Online, have a complaint procedure. Providers will “blacklist” a spammer if they see a pattern of mail coming from a given domain. This is not foolproof in that spammers have multiple paths for sending out email, but it does help to shut down another route. Another option is the FTC. While they do not shut down spammers per say, they do enforce the law on scammers who use email. The two often go hand in hand. Complaints to the FTC go into a centralized database called Consumer Sentinel that is a secure, online database used by civil and criminal law enforcement agencies in the U.S. and abroad.

• Get more advice from anti-spam activist groups such as CAUCE - Many organizations have come together to fight spam. However beware of for-profit companies masquerading as activist organizations by using “.org” as part of their domain name.

• Never "unsubscribe" from spam unless you know the source - That would be from companies or organizations that you recognize and trust. Most reputable companies don’t want to inadvertently send you messages you don’t want. On the other hand, spammers' want you to “unsubscribe" so they can validate your e-mail address. If you do so, they know your address is in use and that is valuable to them. Why? They will then sell lists of active email addresses to other spammers.

• Filter spam before it gets to your inbox – Use of a good server-based spam filter, such as Exchange Sentry, can dramatically cut down on spam before it reaches users.
